Published IOPS per Class
gp1 delivers 7,000 IOPS per 100 GiB provisioned. The number scales with the volume, not the instance it's attached to. The planned io1 class is designed for 14,000.
Flexible Volume Options
General Purpose (gp1) is the class on sale today, and the default when you don't name one. Latency Optimized (io1) and Capacity Optimized (st1) are planned — see what each class is for.
Scalable Capacity
Grow a volume in place as your data grows — resizing is a single API call.

Databases
Postgres or MySQL on gp1 — 7K IOPS per 100 GiB, scaling with the volume you provision.
Data Warehousing
Bulk datasets on gp1, attached to compute instances for analytics runs. A cheaper capacity-optimised class (st1) is planned.
Backup and Recovery
Snapshot a volume and restore it to a new one when you need it — protect the snapshot first, and it can back an image too.
